>> good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, september 22nd. let's start with a quick first look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi, carolyn. good morning to you. starting out nice and dry, but chilly with temperatures in the upper 40s in north day. 48 napa and santa rosa, 50 hayward. warm spot in san carlos at 57. we have a little stratus filling into the bay this morning, but otherwise partly cloudy in oakland. we will be look at a mostly sunny sky today with temperatures, well, you have to go way out to get the 80s around the livermore valley. for the most part 60s and 70s. a few clouds throughout the afternoon in the north bay. we are talking about a warmup as soon as tomorrow. i'll have the details in a few

minutes. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. developing news in san francisco. one person has died, two others injured following a car crash last night. it happened just after 10:00 when a car crashed into a wall on westbound highway 80 at the fifth street off-ramp. three people were in the car. one was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead. the extent. the injuries of the other two are not no one. off-ramp was closed for about an hour while crews worked to clear the scene. no word yet on what caused the crash. a san francisco police officer was injured after crashing into another car. it happened just after 3:30 yesterday afternoon at california street and 12th avenue. a witness steals abc7 news the officer appeared to be on a cell phone and ran a red light. investigators are confirmed the officer broadsided another vehicle, but will only say the details are still under investigation. the other driver was not hurt.

the officer was transported to the hospital, but he was not seriously injured. this morning an east palo alto man is in custody, suspected of killing two women earlier this month. police arrested danny coleman yesterday. they plan 20 charge him with two counts of pushed. investigators say he crashed into the woman's car september 2nd in san jose. the two women were killed. they were heading to work at the airport. any to developing news out of kenya. a hostage standoff with islamic extremists continues one day after they attacked using grenades and assault weapons in a maul in nairobi. a uc graduate is injured. the woman currently lives in kenya. three other americans were also injured. latest tally indicates 59 people were killed and 175 injured in

that attack at the nairobi ball by al-qaeda-linked somali immigrants. chuck sievertson has the latest. >> terrorists unleashed a brazen attack in a shopping mall in kenya's amountal killing dosessens and others. two canadian citizens died, several americans were injured. the gunman scaled the upscale mall in the afternoon first shooting in the parking lot and throwing grenades. then he moved into the mall which was hosting a children's day event. they took hostages. one witnesses said how they separated muslims and nonmuslins. >> some hid under stare as well as. >> we tried escape but they

through a grenade. >> emergency mel technicians tried to get to the understood and dead. police began sr. sounding the small, some were injured. the hours passed and the death toll mounted. >> i ask god to give you comfort as you confront this tragedy. >> a somalian rebel group with links to al-qaeda said they were responsible for the take. they said it was pay for for the push by kenyan forces into somalia to stop the fighting there, and they have threatened more attacks. chuck southeast songs abc news, new york. >> happening today, president obama will remember the victims of the washington navy yard shooting during a memorial service in they're en nor. others being held near the navy facility where officials say 34-year-old aaron alexis fatally shot a dozen people last monday.

eight others were injured. police killed alexis in the gun battle battle. the first lady, michelle obama, will visit with the victims' families today. a moment of silence to remember the victims. it happened on the uss hornet in alameda yesterday honoring female veterans. they were presented with spectacular specially-made quilts of valor in recognition of their honor. >> it is a very nice thing to do for people, i believely today since there was a women's aviation theme. we found a lot of women who have served and who are worthy of the quilts. >> one served in vietnam. share valor quilts were courtesy of the amateur valley quiltters of pleasanton. this morning a teenager is is back with his dad in alabama after disappearing 13 years ago.

the boy's paternal grandmother is in jail charged with felony child abduction. they discovered the teen's identity after school officials in missouri questioned hattie's claim of being his guardian. >> had concerns about an individual who had enrolled the child into school and had some concerns they were the actual parent or custodian. >> the boy's dad said he knew his motor was involved in his son's disappearance but he could never track her down. they said hattie was homeless and was staying in a woman who offered her shelter. it appears the 49ers will not keep all pro linebacker aldon smith off the field this afternoon at candle zwick, despite being arrested for drunk driving. they arrested smith in san jose friday morning. he was found unconscious with his truck with the engine still running. police say his blood alcohol level was double the legal limit. he also had marijuana in his

fall and sunny skies are expected after strong rainstorms doused the bay area yesterday. many folks in san francisco found themselves caught in soaking downpours. in the city's russian hill district, firefighters had to use sauce to disassemble the rain-soaked tree that snapped and smashed two parked suvs. >> i heard a crack and i lacked up and i said what's that? the tree was halfway against the first one, halfway, and then all of a sudden the whole thing came down. the rain also caused delays during yesterday's a's game against the twins and postponed race 14 of the america's cup. in santa clara the rain gathered too quickly to drain. this video was sent to us by a viewer through u-report. this was at the corner of kylie street and benton boulevard, about a block from santa clara high school. in hayward it rained so hard it brought down a branch on to this family's van. you can send in your photos and

videos to ureport at kgo tv.com. that storm also brought the first snow of the season to the sierra. this is a look from the caltrans camera. it is snowing at higher altitude locations such as cassel peak and ecco summit. and no smell at sota springs, surprising motorists. residents say they can't remember getting snow this early. it forced chains to be required along parts of i-80. it is now clear. heavily mountain resort sent us these photos from dipper express and tuber hill. the winter ski season at heavenly kicks off november 22nd, but maybe, lisa, they might get an early start with this? >> well, this would be early. we have offshore winds in the forecast for the week ahead, but you are right, it was definitely got dumped on yesterday and right now starting out with clear sky. here is the explore forum camera where temperatures have dropped

bridge which is supposed to be off-limits to the public. it's graffiti with a huge risk. >> i kind of think it's kind of foolish, actually, because if there's nobody there and there's barriers and they get injured, they are going on the outside of the structure, they can fall, get hurt. >> within the past few days drivers noticed the new paint job on the side of the old s-curve near the tunnel. >> it's bound to happen eventually. that's what i thought. people, you know, there is tagging everywhere. >> it is also representing a serious security issue for caltrans which still owns the defunct bridge and the chp which must keep unwanted people off the old road deck. they caught one or two the very first week the new bridge opened. >> they can be charged with maryland offense of trespassing. obviously for their safety we don't want people to be up there. >> but that is apparently happening, despite the barricades. and even though this is

considered a construction zone slated for demolition. >> the idea is for people to not be on the span of the bridge. we have things i can't talk about but in addition to that we have officers patrolling. >> and the chp said violators will be prosecuted if they are caught, abc7 news. drivers across the state could be in for a big treat by halloween. our media partner, the mercury news reports analysts expect gas prices to drop between 40 to 45 cents a gallon by the time trick-or-treating rolls around. experts say gas prices have a history of dropping from mid-september through halloween, but expect an even bigger dip this year. the reasons, the light hurricane season and easing of middle east tensions and refinery fixes here at home. the average price for a gallon of gas in san francisco is $4.07. in san jose it's four dollars.

and in oakland it's $3.99. sonoma county health officials are warning residents in morning after more signs of west nile virus were spotted in the area. two more mosquitoes and five dead birds have tested positive for the virus. authorities say the mosquitoes were found in cloverdale and santa rosa. the dead birds were found in heelsburg and forestville. in addition, a resident in tiriron and another from fairfax have been diagnosed with the view. there is a plan to revitalize the mid-market area. it is the stretch of market street between fifth and vaness. lilian kim takes us on a tour. >> it's called nema for new market and when it's done it will have about 750 rucksly

rental units, a pool, fitness center, and valet parking are included. kyle is getting his first look at a finished unit. he signed a lease for 1 bedroom for $3,400 a month. >> to be honest, i could have moved anywhere in the city, seema and mission bay have some great apartments. but to be downtown in the heart of the city and really feel its pulse, i i feel i couldn't be better off. >> they credit twitter for the nominee effect they created. the signed the lease on tenth and market and other tech companies followed and a dormant nema project got going again n a few years 4,000 housing units will be add to the mid-market corridor. >> there are housing and businesses there. all that combined with good building policies and supportive policies from city hall have all combined in a very good balance. >> there's a lot more coming

1:44 this afternoon. san carlos, the warmer location at 57. san francisco sitting at 59. as we take a look from our emeryville camera you see a little cloud cover. the sun not coming up until before 7:00. 59 antioch. we are talking about temperatures today not only warmer, but, in fact, the warmest day of the week should arrive as soon as tomorrow. 57 livermore, 52 in concord and finally from our sutro camera, clear and cool this morning. warmer for the first day of fall with plenty of sunshine. a dry forecast for the next several days. in fact, the winds are going to go offshore from the middle of the week until the end of the week. we will look for one of the warmest days to be tomorrow with about five degrees of warming on top. here's a look at our radar and satellite composite. yesterday's area of low pressure with a generous amount of rain

from be a inch in the north bay to a few hundreds around the santa cruz mountains, shift to go the east with the trough. sun my and breezy conditions as high pressure sets offshore. it comes in tomorrow and we will be warmer tomorrow. but today nice afternoon. we will call it mostly sunny in the santa clara valley. 74 san jose. look for numbers in the low to mid-70s on the peninsula palo alto at 72. partly cloudy skies at the coast. san francisco mid-60s. we will have plenty of sunshine, about the winds will be breeze city throughout the afternoon. 57 novato. notice a few more clouds in the north bay with mid-70s and napa after this morning's low. the mid-70s should feel pretty good. low 70s from san leandro to hayward. 74 fremont. temperatures shy of 80 degrees at 77 in pleasanton. a closer look at oakland this afternoon for the game, it should be a nice day with breezy conditions.

picked up for national coastal clean up day yesterday. every park hosted a cleanup event n oakland volunteers picked up trash at the damon slough. they say every effort makes a lot of difference. >> if you don't start making a difference, it will just get worse. if no one sits here and picks anything up, imagine how filthy it would look. it would be horrible. so eats very important to me. >> overall, volunteers collected more than 17,000 pounds of debris. scientists are now tracking whales in the bay area to help test a new whale-spotting app. they will chart whales for about a week. the information will be used for the app whale spotter, which will help ships navigate around blue and hump-back whales that feed in the bay area.

>> welcome back. we are starting this half-hour with a quick look at the weather with meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning. the first day of fall arrives this afternoon and temperatures ranging from the upper 40s to mid-40s in santa rosa to the 50s. that's five or six degrees cooler than yesterday with the cloud cover. we are much, much dryer. this afternoon plenty of sunshine and a warmer day today for san jose and the rest of the bay area. we will call it mostly sunny. the coast, a couple clouds in and around the bay. still plenty of sunshine, upper 60s to mid-70s around oakland and castro valley a long the coast, trafficca, half moon bay. mid-70s to near 80. we will talk about a warmer day tomorrow, the first full day of fall. the offshore winds are turning for the rest of the week ahead. carolyn. >> lisa, thank you. the death toll from the storms in mexico have surpassed 100 and

could rise quickly. mud from last monday's landslide has covered off of the remote coffee growing village where 68 people are missing. yesterday the wreckage of a federal helicopter that was on a rescue mission was found. all on board are dead. tens of thousands of tourists reminute trapped in acapulco. the most powerful typhoon of the year has swept through and is taking aim at hong kong. 20 inches of fell in taiwan yesterday and 19 expected to. it was downgraded from a super typhoon after sustained winds fell below 150 miles an hour. better news out of c.. the unaccounted number of people unaccounted for for from the destructive floods are down to

passing the democratic-controlled senate, potentially leaving the government without operating money on october 1st, inflicting potential pain on millions of americans. >> military personnel, including those deployed overseas, won't get their paychecks on time. federal loans for rural communities, new home buyers, will be frozen. >> there's another crisis, the debt ceiling. if they don't raise the government spending limit, the u.s. could default on its massive debt. vote to raise the debt ceiling could turn nasty. >> we just need washington to pause, reflect and see what is possible in our great nation. >> abc news. now if an agreement is not reached by the end of the month, how would a government shut down affect you? social security payments could be delayed and new claims may not be processed. core service lake medicare and

the veterans benefits will continue, but new filers may have problems with agencies being understaffed. the parts of the government that protect our national security and safety will reminute open, but other government offices would close. visits to the national parks, museums and zoos would have to be postponed because they would likely shut down. traveling abroad may also post problems. the state department would likely have to halt new passport and visa applications and hundreds of thousands of federal workers could expect to be furloughed without pay. president obama says the gop strategy of defunding his healthcare agenda, obamacare; not going to happen. president made the remarks as he and the first lady attended the congressional black caucus foundation's annual awards dinner last night. he spoke of the need to give everyone the means to succeed. >> we have to pick up the torch of economic justice. we have to make this a country

where anybody who works hard can earn their way into the middle class. and until we do, we will not let up and we will not rest. >> the president also talked about the work that needs to be done to reduce the black unemployment rate that is twice what it is for white americans. the showdown is looming in washington over the budget and coming up on "this week" key lawmakers speak on the potential shut down. and we will hear from one when wants to defund the healthcare law. can you catch it here on abc7 at 8:00 this morning >> tens of thousands of californians are not getting their unemployment checks on time this month. it's because of computer problems at the state employment development department. about 185,000 of the nearly 800,000 residents who receive unemployment benefits have been affected. hundreds of employees are on the

job this weekend trying to get those checks out. new this morning, the kentfield fire protection district is lack to beef up its fire tax. according to our media partner, the marin independent journal, the district is asking voters to pass a few tax of up to ten cents a square foot per building, sup six cents a that's correct on a 2,000 square foot home would rise from 120 to $200. officials say the district has not raised taxes since 1980 and property tax revenues have dipped in recent years. they say this tax hike is necessary to keep up with growing costs. a n.a.s.a. mission hunt fourth comments is now over. for nine years the n.a.s.a. aircraft known at deep impact rooms space hunting for probes. it fell silent last month. they tried to re-establish contact but they have not been

>> happening today, oracle's annual open-world conference kicks off in san francisco. tens of thousands of attend december are expected to flood the mass zone any center for the week-long contest. oracle's ceo, larry ellison, will deliver the keynote address. some criticized him for missing the company's earning call last week to focus on the america's cup. the conference is expected to pump millions of dollars of revenue into the bay area. you know, we live in a world where something custom made or one-of-a-kind is prestigious and usually expensive. but a new breed of printer

connected to a computer is expected to revolutionize manufacturing for everything from auto parts to body parts. business and technology reporter david louie shows us where 3-d printing is heading. >> they are the hottest printers on the market, even though the repetitive motion reminds people of old-fashioned dot fay tricks printers. >> complexity is free. the printer doesn't care what you throw at it. the more creative you can be, the more express he have the printer can be. >> this is what they can make, toys and figures and medical i am pants, fabric for clothing, base for a guitar and something edible such as candy. >> it's a completely new business model enabled by the ability to make complex parts on demand in a batch size of one. >> the technology has been around since the 80s but it's time has come as the demand is coming in the medical, automotive and fashion world w that comes concern about counterfeiting.

of that rain yesterday. it's high pressure sits offshore you will begin to build in and that will bring the breezy conditions this afternoon. in fact, we will look for the gusty winds after about 3:00. the week ahead in oakland, it's looking pretty nice. temperatures tomorrow climbing through the 70s. in fact, 7ed. a weak system moving in on tuesday bringing breezy winds and cooler numbers through wednesday. but then with us behind that system, we will look for the winds to go offshore and temperatures once again climbing back up to near 80 degrees. san jose, well, you will be almost as warm today and tomorrow, near 80 degrees. but then look what happens with temperatures, the cooler part of the week, tuesday and wednesday, rebounding by friday and saturday. so temperatures across the state then, chilly with mid-to upper 30s this morning. the sierra nevada recovering to 63. a dry afternoon today with 72 in the southern sierra. 57 los angeles.

sunshine from santa cruz and monterey and temperatures across the bay today, low 60s half moon bay. some sunshine here. more sun with mid-70s in santa cruz. a few clouds up in the north bay with 75 in napa. upper 70s for the high end in livermore with 78 in concord. later on this afternoon at about 1:25 for you if you are head today candlestick, temperatures in the low 60s. mid-60s by the afternoon and very sunny there. bring sun block with the hat. should be a beautiful day for the first day of fall. warms back up thursday, friday and saturday. and by mid-to late week it looks like the winds could be gusty and we will be much dryer by then, drying out from yesterday's rain. so that means high fire danger. >> oh, yeah. yesterday's rain, though, the a's game was delayed a couple hours. so that was really quite -- now, was that an anomaly, just out of the blue?
